There is an article I read the other day, that basically says there are only two reasons that people leave Facebook:
- You’re an attention seeker and will probably threaten to leave again and again just to get people’s reactions.
- You’re a douchebag hipster who is being a “conspicuous non-consumer.”
I absolutely promise that I am neither of those things – but I AM leaving Facebook.
I’m bored of, annoyed by, and frustrated with Facebook.
I’m sick of seeing that people I know to be good and decent have bought into the putting on a show and popularity contest that Facebook has become. I’m tired of all the insincerity. I’m done with reading people’s pity-parties and witnessing their passive-aggression.
Have I taken part in some of the stupid crap that goes on? Yes, which saddens me and is just another reason to get away from it all because that is not who I am.
I have considered leaving the social network before, but finally the cons really outweigh the pros for me.
It’s going to take some adjustment – getting used to not having one website where I can keep track of family and friends and keep them all updated on me with one click. Eventually I think that it will be good because it will really show what relationships are authentic because me and these other people will have to actually put a little effort when we want to know how the other is doing.
I look forward to this change and getting rid of the digital-mental clutter.
